Metal Casting Technology
1. Loss of wax casting method. Also known as dewaxing casting, its principle is very simple: wax image is made from wax, and then a layer of heat-resistant model material is poured on by the enclosure method. The enclosure model is heated until the wax begins to melt, and finally dried, leaving a hollow shape with the wax, and then pouring the metal solution into the hollow. Once the metal solution is cooled, the enclosure will fall off and a wax replica of the same shape is made.
Lost wax casting is also an important invention in the history of metallurgy and casting. Its precision and complexity of casting shape are incomparable with other casting methods. In the Warring States Period, wax-loss casting method was used in China. The Chu Tomb of Xichuan Temple in Henan Province and the Zeng Hou Yi Tomb in Suixian County in Hubei Province were unearthed with wax-loss casting bronzes featuring fine and elaborate features. The characteristic of wax loss casting is that the wax model can be melted and burned. According to its characteristics, the castings with complicated shapes can be obtained. The "Ma Ta Fei Yan" unearthed in Leitai Han Tomb in Wuwei, Gansu Province, during the Eastern Han Dynasty, was assembled together after wax loss casting, and was also a fine product of wax loss technology.
