“活动雕塑”这一说法最早是杜尚在看到了考尔德的那些抽象的、能够依靠风力运动的雕塑时提出的。因为这类雕塑与传统雕塑的不同之处在，它能够在空间中借助各种力量——空气的流动、水力以及机械动力等等产生形体上的变化或者空间中的位移。而此类实验并不是战后艺术家的发明，最先在这个方面进行尝试的主要是 构成主义者，比如加波和莫霍利· 纳吉。而杜尚实际上也是这类作品的重要先驱之一。
The concept of "active sculpture" was first put forward by Duchamp when he saw those abstract sculptures of Calder that could move by wind. Because of the difference between this kind of sculpture and the traditional sculpture, it can produce the change of form or the displacement in space with the help of various forces in space, such as air flow, hydraulic and mechanical power. This kind of experiment is not the invention of postwar artists. The first attempts in this field are mainly constructivists, such as Gabor and Moholy Nagi. In fact, Duchamp is one of the important forerunners of this kind of works.
